How to protect your dog from fleas?

Kaip apsaugoti šunį nuo blusų?

Human living conditions are one of the factors influencing the appearance of fleas on the underparts of an animal’s body, but dogs of clean owners can also be infected by passing other dogs, in stairwells in apartment buildings, and fleas can be carried by other people. These 1-5 mm insects are characterised by their ability to cover short distances quickly in search of food. This characteristic accelerates the migration of the parasites and increases the number of infestations of other dogs, cats and humans.

A seemingly innocent little parasite can be a vector of dangerous and difficult-to-treat diseases: plague, tularemia, pseudotuberculosis, listeriosis, typhoid fever, endemic rat spotted fever, cat scratch disease. Children are sensitive to the secondary enzymes secreted and may be allergic to them. Fleas also spread worm eggs and can infect not only dogs but also their owners.

“The veterinarians at Kaivana Clinic offer several measures to help protect your pet from fleas: (1) special drops that last for 2-3 months; (2) repellent collars; (3) disposable bathing products. After examining your dog and assessing its condition, our specialists will select the most suitable protection for your dog, which you can buy at the Kaivana pharmacies near the clinics. If the dog infects its owner with fleas, the owner should also start appropriate treatment.

Antiparasitic products to protect dogs from fleas are distributed over the animal’s skin, enter the sweat glands, and circulate in the superficial capillary layer of the circulatory system, giving off a specific odour that is unacceptable to fleas. The agents do not enter the liver and kidneys and therefore have no adverse side effects. Not every product is suitable for all animals, so the most effective method of protection must be selected individually.

Some dogs may be allergic to certain protective products, so we recommend that you keep the bottle or label when you first buy the product so that you know what your dog is allergic to in future. When using the drops for the first time, we advise you to test them on a small area to prevent your pet from licking them. If you use a collar, do not wear it for long periods. Once applied, observe the dog’s behaviour and well-being – if you see even a minimal allergic reaction, do not use the prescribed remedy again.

It is also important to note that when using the daily collar and the repellent collar in parallel, there should be a gap of at least two fingers’ width between them. Every day, care should be taken to ensure that the treatment collar does not get stuck under the daily collar. If you notice that this has happened, immediately return the treatment collar to its correct position. Remember that it is recommended that the dog should not be handled for 2 days before and 2 days after the removal of the treatment collar.
