Eye diseases in animals

The most common signs of eye disease that pet owners report to the veterinary clinic are tearing, light avoidance, and rubbing or rubbing the affected eye. Most of these problems are related to trauma, allergies or viral diseases.

Increased tearing is also caused by ocular conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the eyelid lining. This disease can be triggered by reactions to various environmental irritants and allergens: shampoos, food, dust or particles of sand and soil in the eye. If the tears are purulent, a bacterial infection may be suspected. In cats, on the other hand, this symptom is typical of a viral disease.

Corneal lesions and ulcers are usually the result of trauma, when pets bump into other animals. Scratches on cats are particularly dangerous. If these eye problems are spotted early and the right help is given, corneal ulcers can be treated more successfully. Otherwise, the pet’s eyesight is at risk.
